Prof. Ing. Gian Carlo Montanari

He is Full Professor of Electrical Technology at the Department of Electrical Engineering, and teaches the courses of Reliability and statistics for electrical systems and Innovative electrical technologies.
For 1996 he is President of the Council of the Course of Electrical Engineering of the Bologna University.
He is IEEE Fellow and member of AEI and Institute of Physics.
For 2001 he is a member of the Board of the Excellence College of the University of Bologna.
He has worked since 1979 in the field of aging and endurance of solid insulating materials and systems, of diagnostics of electrical systems and innovative electrical materials (magnetics, electrets, superconductors) at the Department of Electrical Engineering. He has been also engaged in the fields of power quality and energy market, power electronics, reliability and statistics of electrical systems.
He won national and international awards, among those IEEE IAS Prize Paper Award, AEI Faletti-Nosari award, 1987, AEI Asea Brown Boveri award, 1995.
He is member of Scientific Committees of numerous international conferences, IEEE: CEIDP, ISEI, ISEIM, ICSD, CSC, ICPADM, and IEE: INSUCON. He has been chairman and/or invited speaker in several international conferences.
He organized the 1994 IEEE ICHPS VI, held in Bologna on September 1994.
He has been convener of IEC working group: WG1 of 15E, WG4 of IEC 98, WG15 of IEC 33; he is also member of various WG in TC 15E and 98.
Since 1996 he is the Italian representative in CIGRE and President of the Italian Chapter of the IEEE DEIS.
From 1994 to 1999 he was AdCom member of the IEEE DEIS.
He is convener of the Statistics Committee and member of the Space Charge, Multifactor Stress and Meetings Committees of IEEE DEIS.
He is Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Dielectrics and Electrical Insulation.
He is referee of IEEE Transactions on Dielectrics and Electrical Insulation, IEEE Transactions on Reliability, IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery and Power Systems, IEEE Transactions on Industry Applications, Journal of Physics (D and Condensed Matter), Journal of Electrostatics, Journal of Applied Physics and other Journals.
He founded and leads the
LIMAT (High Voltage and Material Engineering Lab) of the Department of Electrical Engineering of the Bologna University.
He is founder and President of the spin-off TechImp, established on 1999, and co-founder of the spin-off ACME (December 2001).
He is responsible of national and international research projects, involving public institutions, as the Ministry of University and Research of Italy (MURST and MIUR) and the European Community (projects ARTEMIS and DURASMART). He has or had also contracts with utilities, service and manufacturing enterprises, such as ENEL, CESI, Pirelli, Borealis, Enichem, ENEL. He cooperates with other structures (e.g. UL, Dow, CNR in Canada and France) on research activities regarding investigation of electrical materials and systems.
At 12/01 he is author or co-author of 366 scientific papers. 77 of these papers were published in IEEE Transactions, 46 in major international scientific journals, 21 in the most important Italian journal, while 182 papers were presented at international conferences (mostly IEEE).
