Outdoor Insulator

PD measurement can be a fundamental tool to assess pollution condition of HV insulators employed in overhead transmission lines.

Especially in salt-humid climates and polluted areas, insulators must be cleaned from time to time to avoid flashovers. Usually, this operation is carried out using a Time-Based Maintenance (TBM) strategy (i.e., cleaning insulator surfaces at fixed time intervals). Sometimes, particularly when climatic conditions undergo anomalous changes, TBM can be inadequate to prevent flashover. Moreover, since cleaning is extremely expensive, the cost-effectiveness of TBM can be questioned.

By monitoring PD activity, it is possible to derive information about insulator surface pollution level. Therefore, it is possible to determine the right moment for insulator surface washing, thus allowing the utility to switch from TBM to Condition Based Maintenance (CBM) procedures.
