Transformers

PD measurement is a fundamental tool to assess the condition of oil filled and cast resin power transformers. PD measurements offer, in fact, insight into the presence of harmful defects that can compromise transformer insulation. Diagnoses obtained from PD analysis, allow Condition Based Maintenance (CBM) practices to be established. For Oil-Filled Transformers it is of primary importance to distinguish between discharges in oil from discharges affecting paper and pressboard. The first can be withstood for relatively long periods, due to the almost-regenerative nature of mineral oils. The second promote fast degradation processes and may lead to breakdown even in a short time. A combined use of PD analysis, gas analysis, humidity and temperature monitoring can lead to a thorough overview of transformer conditions.

Techimp Systems research has now developed an advanced system for Global Monitoring of Transformers. A DGA unit monitors dissolved key gas concentrations and trendings, while external bushing sensors monitors tan-delta time variations, while keeping a full integration in our PD sensing and elaboration units. Diagnostic levels, specifically developed to integrate data from each sensor,  provide a reinforcement in the diagnostic effectiveness. The result is the advantage of a unique system for multiple diagnostic coverage, with better protection at lower costs.

Cast Resin Transformers should indeed be free of PD, since the presence of PD can indicate bad impregnation and/or the existence of local degradation processes.
